Reaching the Hearts of the Trauma-Damaged Child
8:00-4:30
Room: IMMS Cafeteria
Presenter: Trey Lackey, LPC
Description: Every teacher is committed to the success of the children in their charge. And most know that the first step of teaching our children is to develop a relationship with them. However, some of our students seem intent on not allowing us to truly know and connect with them. Many of these same students have difficulty seeing themselves in a positive way, unable to believe they might be loveable, capable, or worthy of success. The philosophy of this day-long workshop is rooted in the belief that all kids have an innate desire to connect with caring grown-ups, to be near us, to follow us, and to learn from us. None of these will occur if they are unable or unwilling to give us their hearts, and receive our gift of love to them. If they could do better, they would do better, behaviorally and academically. The course is designed to help participants understand the long-term impact that a difficult childhood can have on a child, and, in particular, their ability to feel positively about themselves and to connect emotionally with others in a safe and meaningful way. Once understood, we can apply new strategies to help make a real and lasting difference in their lives. How can I reach this child who pushes me away, often with cruelty and hatred? How can I love a child who seems to deliberately do things to hurt me? Why should I keep trying to help a child who clearly does not want my help?
