The course includes how cognitive strengths and weaknesses impact academic areas and appropriate interventions and strategies that can be applied in the classroom setting. The purpose of this course is to enable you to better meet the needs of your students and their individual learning styles. In order to complete the course during the Special Populations Academy, participants must complete all online modules between May 27-June 3 2020. A webinar is scheduled on Wednesday, June 3 at 1:00 to provide an opportunity for you to ask questions, provide feedback, and explain how you will implement the strategies learned with one of your students. You will need to acquire a Full Individual Evaluation of a student your teach from your campus diagnostician so that you can apply the knowledge learned by documenting the student's cognitive profile on the tools provided in the course. Upon implementation of the strategies learned for the areas of deficit with one of your students, teachers will post a reflection of their experience in the discussion of this Canvas course as well as participate in the live webinar for credit. |

After a tireless search for a vocational school that would accommodate Austin’s needs, he was able to learn the skills to become a certified prep chef. Since then, he has successfully held a variety of positions in the restaurant industry. With help from his family (aka his Mom, Jan), Austin’s Underdawgs launched in April 2016 selling “Dawgs” – hot dogs – and became an overnight success! Now four years later, Austin has sold more than 34,000 Underdawgs from his 32 foot Dawgmobile.Austin wants to show people that with a little support and training, anyone can grow to be a successful member of their community. Jan and Austin are committed to developing opportunities for adults all across the nation. They have established a non-profit foundation that focuses on job training, advocacy and support for adults with intellectual developmental differences. Franchising Underdawgs and the development of The Mingus Job Accelerator gives others a chance to explore their passion, make a living wage within their community and even meaningful self-employment. Vocational on-the-job training is paramount for Adults with Down Syndrome, giving them the opportunity to gain practical job experience in various skill sets which can lead to job placement within their community. At age 41, Austin is living proof of the power of living inclusively in the community. |
